How to Track Property Expenses

1 min readUpdated 15 Oct 2026Reviewed by Homeyhuts Editorial Team

Learn how to record property expenses consistently so you can understand operating costs and profitability.

Expense tracking helps you understand what the property actually costs to operate.

  • Common expense categories:
  • Housekeeping.
  • Salaries or staff payments.
  • Repairs.
  • Maintenance.
  • Utilities.
  • Internet.
  • Consumables.
  • Property supplies.
  • OTA or platform fees.
  • Homeyhuts fees where applicable.
  • Marketing.
  • Taxes and other applicable charges.
  • For each expense, record:
  • Date.
  • Property.
  • Category.
  • Description.
  • Amount.
  • Payment method.
  • Vendor/staff member where useful.
  • Supporting invoice or receipt.

A good expense record lets you compare revenue against operating costs instead of looking only at booking value.

Example:

Two properties may generate similar revenue but have very different maintenance and staff costs. Expense tracking reveals which property is actually more profitable.

Tip: Record expenses regularly. Reconstructing several months of expenses later is much harder and less accurate.
