When deciding to become a homestay host in Uttarakhand, it's important to understand the local laws. This guide provides helpful information to get you started with the regulations for hosting in Uttarakhand. This list is not exhaustive and should not be considered legal advice. For specific questions, contact the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDP), other government agencies, or consult a local lawyer.
Homestay regulations come under Incredible India Bed and Breakfast scheme and NIDHI.
Registration Steps
1. Obtain Necessary Registrations and Permissions
- Before listing your property, make sure you have all the required registrations and permissions.
- Hotels, motels, timeshare apartments, bed & breakfasts, lodges, resorts, guest houses, paying guest houses, ashrams, tourist rest houses, motor caravan, tent colony/nature camp, and cruise/houseboats:
- If you want to list any of these, you need to get the necessary registrations and permissions under the Uttarakhand Tourism and Travel Business Registration Rules, 2014. You can do this online via the Uttarakhand Tourism Travel Trade Registration website. Check the guidelines for mandatory requirements for registration of various types of accommodations. You can also visit the UTDP website for more details.
Homestays:
- The Guest Uttarakhand Home Accommodation (Homestay) Rules, 2015 require all homestays to be registered. You can submit your application to the District Tourism Development Officer of your district or use the Uttarakhand Tourism Homestay Registration website for online registration and renewal.
2. Follow Homestay Regulations
The Homestay Regulations have several requirements for hosts. For example, the homestay must be a residential complex where the owner and their family live. Additionally:
- Only up to six rooms (with no more than four beds in each room) can be rented out.
- Each room must have an attached bathroom with proper hygiene facilities.
- You must keep a detailed record of all guests and send this information to local police and the District Tourism Development Office by the 5th of every month.
For more details, check the Homestay FAQs and the UTDP website.
